Internet Explorer Plug-in and Document Chaining: document "... could not be opened"

Since upgrading to QlikView 12.xx, using document chaining with the IE plug-in is unstable, and results in the error "document ... could not be opened"
The issue happens when using relative paths. Using absolute path results in a request to download the chained document, which is not an option for a standard usage.
Everything works fine with AJAX.
Environments:
- QlikView 12.00, 12.10 and 12.20 (November 2017)
Resolution
This behaviour has been identified as R&D as a defect, with ID QV-13380.
The current target release for a possible fix is planned for QlikView 12.30 IR (November 2018 IR).
In the meantime, please use AJAX whenever possible as a workaround.
