Qlik Sense Desktop does not appear to run after installation (although the Sense and Node.js processes are running in Task Manager) - Antivirus and Dell Cylance
Article Number: 000046922 | Last Modified: 2018/11/21
Description
Upon installing Qlik Sense Desktop Personal Edition, the Qlik Sense Desktop will not run on the screen although the back-end processes and node.js are running. The very first time you launch it, the GUI pops up for a second but disappears. All future attempts will not show a pop-up.
Task Manager on the Windows computer will show that the a Sense Desktop process and some node.js processes are running, but not the application.
The cause of the problem is that when the executable file "QlikSenseBrowser.exe" is run, it calls upon a .dll in the same folder, and then one or both of these files are immediately deleted by the antivirus and/or security suite. The affected files that Antivirus interferes with for Qlik Sense Desktop Personal Edition are usually found in the following directory (assuming your install is on the "C" drive): C:\Users\USER\AppData\Local\Programs\Qlik\Sense\QlikSenseBrowser. This is not a Qlik issue but rather a client-side problem which must be addressed by the customer's IT dept or Network Security team.
Resolution
The issue is environmental on the client-side as it's strictly related to antivirus, antimalware, and security suites installed on the computer.
The main product that causes such issues would be the new Dell Cylance, which has a number of false positives. However there are other antivirus and security products that are known to delete Qlik "exe" files upon execution, after installation. The resolution is to provide full exceptions for the following directories or Qlik Sense Desktop will not run. If real-time scanning and services are still running, then this software must be uninstalled.
Another item that the client's IT Department must check is to see if there is any group policy in place to run only approved .EXE files, or .EXE files in approved directories, as this is the case with many financial and federal companies.
If the file "QlikSenseBrowser.exe" does not exist, then the software will not run. Ensure this file exists by running the file by double-clicking on it and ensuring that it does not get deleted afterwards, else Desktop Personal edition will be unable to launch the GUI on the Windows computer.
