Broken thumbnail image in duplicate app when original app deleted

In app image, as soon as the original app is deleted all apps that have been duplicated through that one loses their thumbnail image.
It seems the image is replicated to the duplicated apps appcontent folder - but client tries to fetch the image from the old path.The use case is that since we cannot unpublish then one way of updating an app is to duplicate the original app.
1. Create an app and attach an in app image through Media Library
2. Duplicate the app
3. The new app thumbnail image is working
4. Delete the original app
5. The duplicate app thumbnail image stops working
Cause
Content is properly distributed to /appcontent/DUPLICATE_APP_ID/... but once the original app is deleted, when referencing the duplicate, repository tries fetching the content with an original (deleted) app's ID resulting in this error.
This is a bug found in June and September release.

Resolution
Publish via replace is working.
