Core based licenses in Qlik Sense

Core-based and capacity-based licensing is a change from traditional licensing. Rather than limiting the number of users who can access the Qlik Sense site by a limit on tokens, core-based licensing restricts user access by limiting the number of CPU cores which can be used by the Engine to deliver end-user content.

With a core-based license, there is no functional reason to use the License Monitor app since the users will not use tokens. Instead, consumption of apps can be gauged by reviewing the Session Overview and Session Details sheets on the Operations Monitor.

Environments:

  • Qlik Sense Enterprise on Windows with Core-based license

After applying the license, the administrator should review the Engine configuration to ensure that sufficient capacity has been assigned to the Engine(s) in the Qlik Sense site.

In this example, 256 cores are allocated to the license but the Central only has 8 available cores:

After adjusting the Cores to allocate to 8, we then have 248 cores which can be allocated across RIM nodes, if applicable.

See also Get Started with APIs on Windows > Qlik Analytics Platform on help.qlik.com.
To prevent user access security rules must be created.

Hi, What will happen if I have allocated 0 cores on the failover node?

Hello @Karthikb

If no cores are allocated to the failover node and the failover node is meant to have an engine to serve documents, then you will not have an engine available should a failover be required.  This will lead to documents not loading and the users having their experience disrupted.

All the best,

Hi @Sonja_Bauernfeind @ ,

If I have 4 nodes ( server ) and each server has X Cores, the cores allocated (all engines) = X+X+X+X?

Hello @maryamnassreddine

This number is based on all cores available across the nodes. See Distribution of engine cores (core-based licensing, QAP) for details.

All the best,

Hi @Sonja_Bauernfeind  how to identify if the entire license core is utilized and additional license core is required. What will be the error .

Hello @BoB_Qlik_Support

You cannot "over-allocate" cores. If your system has (for simplicities' sake) cores and your license only allows 2, then you can only use 2. You will not get an error for the remaining 2.

Are you maybe mixing up core-based licenses (which refers to CPU cores) with a capacity-based user license?

See Access types licenses for more information about license models. And License management for more details about each license type (user licenses, not core licenses).

All the best,
Sonja

@Sonja_Bauernfeind  I am referring to core based license .

Example  I have 20 core license and current user base (say 200 ) is working fine with it. If am expecting the user base will increase to 400 with same set of Qlik reports  , how much additional core should I get.

Also if there is a error message when entire core is consumed.

Hello @BoB_Qlik_Support

The errors that you will experience are that the system may not be able to handle that many users so that you will see resource exhaustion.

The Qlik software does not match "user count" vs cores. If you need assistance in finding out how many cores you need for a specific amount of users, I need to recommend you to get in touch with your account manager to have them assist you with sizing questions. We have services that can be engaged for this.

All the best,
Sonja
