This article provides quick step-by-step instruction on how to enable Graceful Document Refresh when using Internet Explorer Plugin. This is not supported for Ajax clients.

Environment:

  • QlikView
    With Internet Explorer Plugin

Resolution:

Allow Only One Copy in Memory option:

  1. In QlikView Management Console (QMC), navigate to System > Setup > QlikView Server > QVS resource > Documents tab and check the box “Allow only one copy of document in memory”
  2. Exit the QMC and open the QVW you want to enable Graceful Refresh on (this needs to be done for each and every document you want to enable the feature upon), in QlikView Desktop
  3. Open the Settings > Document Properties menu
  4.  Navigate to the Server tab
  5.  Pull down second drop-down bar (Client Refresh Initiation Mode), select “Just Do It”. (This may be grayed out, in which case change setting in step 6. below prior make this change, then proceed reverting back the change in step 6.)
  6.  Pull down the first drop-down bar (Refresh mode when Document is Updated on Server) and select “Server performs refresh automatically without client interaction”
  7. Check the "Enable Push from Server" check box as well to allow the server to automatically push the updated view versus the user having to click to pull the refresh
  8. Save the qvw. Graceful Refresh is now enabled

Allow Multiple Copies in Memory option:
Note
: When this option is enabled, push from the server is not recommended and may not work when enabled. The steps below should be followed to at least allow for a Graceful Refresh that is client initiated.

  1. In QMC, navigate to System > Setup > QlikView Server > QVS resource > Documents tab and uncheck the box "Allow only one copy of document in memory"
  2. Exit the QMC and use Desktop client to open the QVW file you wish to enable Graceful Refresh with multiple copies in memory option enabled
  3. Open the Settings > Document Properties menu
  4. Navigate to the Server tab
  5. Choose one of the first two option in the Server Refresh drop-down (Refresh mode when Document is Updated on Server) settings instead of the "Server performs refresh automatically..." option (Note: The 'Client too old' reference refers to when we first introduced this feature and literally means client too old, this is really no longer valid in the currently supported QlikView tracks, and we are working to remove the verbiage to avoid confusion)
  6. Choose one of the Client Refresh (Client Refresh Initiation Mode) options from the drop-down depending upon how you wish to allow the users to refresh to newer version of the QVW. An example is found under How to set up Client Initiates Refresh in AJAX
  7. Save the QVW, the optional refresh options are now enabled

Note: See Document Properties: Server for further details.
